As a second-generation member who grew up in Queenstown Chinese Methodist Church, I thank God for the privilege of writing the church’s 60th Anniversary song,《致新的一代》(“O Generations Yet Unborn”).

Our previous anniversary songs, 《我们的故事》(35th Anniversary) and《造物的一双手》 (50th Anniversary), focused on the church’s beginnings and God’s faithfulness in its growth. This time, I wanted to focus on the church community — the generations who have worshipped here over the past 60 years, and those who will carry the faith into the future.

The inspiration came from Psalm 48:12–14 and Psalm 78:4–6, both of which emphasise passing on the knowledge of God to the next generation. These passages became the foundation of the song’s theme and title. The chorus employs a literary device directly addressing the “generations yet unborn,” reminding them that the God who guided our forefathers is also our God and will be their God. The repeated call to “Hear now” is intentionally emphasised in both lyric and melody, underscoring the imperative to pass on this message of faith.

Each of the three verses highlights a different generation within the church.

The first verse portrays our children and youth. Through images of running feet, caring adults, and relationships formed in the church community, it reflects their journey of learning about Christ, prayer, Scripture, and discovering Jesus as the greatest treasure in life.

The second verse focuses on the main congregation. It celebrates worship, spiritual growth, evangelism, missions, and service. The lyrics also incorporate references to our church’s history, including the former motto“一一得一”(“Each One Winning One”), the imagery of God’s flock, and themes drawn from songs that have shaped our church’s identity over the years.

The third verse honours our senior members. Their lives bear witness to God’s faithfulness through decades of service and testimony. Though age is visible on their faces and hands, their hearts remain filled with the hope of eternity. Musically, this verse moves from a reflective mood to a triumphant expression of the believer’s eternal hope and future worship before God.

A common thread running through all three verses is the Word of God. Each generation is called to learn it, proclaim it, and live it. God’s Word remains the unchanging foundation upon which every generation of believers stands.

Writing this song was both a challenging and rewarding journey. I sought to ensure that the lyrics were firmly anchored in Scripture while remaining accessible and meaningful to the congregation. The melody was intentionally crafted to be singable, allowing the entire church family to unite in worship.

I am deeply grateful to Justin Yeo and Leong Shengyu for their invaluable help in refining and arranging the song, to Justin for translating the English lyrics, and to Rev Ling Tieng Ngung for his pastoral guidance and encouragement.

Above all, this song is an offering of praise to God, our King. He has faithfully guided our church through the past 60 years and will continue to lead His people for generations to come. To Him alone be the highest praise.
